What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage was developed by Per Henrik Ling who opened the first Swedish
institute in London in 1838.
Ling developed movements such as ‘effleurage’, a light stroke with more
pressure towards the heart that is designed to move toxins from the body;
‘petrissage’ which is a deeper movement to release toxins from the muscle
and help to realign the muscle fibres; and ‘tapotement’ that includes
movements designed to help stimulate the area and relieve congestion.
Swedish Massage uses a ‘carrier’ oil; this is a blend of base oils chosen
after a consultation with the client. A full body massage involves working
on the back, legs, stomach, arms, neck and face. If you have a specific
area that you wish treated, the massage can be adapted to allow for more
focus. Some people do not like having their abdomen massaged and in this
instance it is possible to change the massage routine to something more
suitable for you.
A massage can help to move toxins from the muscles, realign muscle fibres,
break down knots and nodules. With regular treatments massage can help to
maintain a healthy lifestyle.
What to Expect
During your first treatment there is a health consultation to identify any
areas that need additional work or any health problems I need to be aware of.
Once completed, I will leave you to undress, lie on the couch and cover
yourself in a towel. I only reveal the part of the body I am working on.
This ensures you remain warm and comfortable and do not feel exposed.
To allow you to feel fully relaxed I will not begin any conversations
although I will ask about the pressure of the massage.
